Concert Reviews

Great Big Sea - June 23, 1997 Coronation Park - Oakville
They are the first band that I saw live and it was at the Oakville Waterfront festival...But I still count it as a concert. They are a really good live band because they have a lot of energy on stage. I had a lot of fun, and so did my friends who I dragged along who had never heard of GBS before!

Our Lady Peace/Everclear - Janurary 17, 1998 Maple Leaf Gardens - Toronto
This was the frist concert that I really bought tickets for. But then I had to sell them. Why, you ask. Well I won an e-mail contest for 2 tickets, go to their sound check and meet them! That was a really great experience for my frist concert!! Everclear were good, but I don't really like them. I think that all of their songs sound the same. Our Lady Peace on the other hand were amazing! They are a really good live band! Raine really puts a lot of emotion into the music. I have some pictures of me and them up on the left :)

Radiohead/Sprituilized - April 12, 1998 Maple Leaf Gardens - Toronto
I had never heard of Sprituilized before. They are..weird. Mostly instrumental, unless I just couldn't hear him singing... Radiohead on the other hand I did know. Some people might say that they're too depressing. They just let out their depression in their music and you can tell when you see them play. They put on a good show. I had good seats and I sang along and got into the music with them!

The Vans Warped Tour - July 24 1998 [the day before my birthday] The Docks - Toronto
This was a big show with about 30 punk/ska bands. The bands that I saw were: Voodoo Glow Skuls, don't really like them. Rancid, they were good. Snapcase, they were cool hardcore. Cherry Popping Dadddies, they didn't like moshers. The Specials, good old ska! NoFX, awesome punks! MxPx, some more awesome punks! And Less Than Jake who are a really good ska band! I think I saw some others, but I can't remember right now. . . This was a long show! It started at noon and went till 9pm. During that time I had nothing to eat other than dust! It was in a gravel pit.

Great Big Sea/Squeeze/The New Meanies - Juin 19, 1998 Molson Ampitheatre - Toronto
The New Meanies were ok, but I don't really like them. Squeeze are an 80's band trying to make a comeback. They really have to try harder since they were never that good in the first place! GBS were awesome, like always! I went to this concert with my Dad, because no-one else likes GBS...Well you all suck and don't know what a great show you're missing!!

Backstreet Boys/Aaron Carter - August 22, 1998 Molson Ampitheatre - Toronto
Now you may be wondering how I could have gone to Warped a month before and then go to a BSB concert after...Well this is why I went: My friend, Aprile, has connections. Her sister likes BSB and well she had 2 extra tickets so Aprile asked me if I'd like to go with her. So how could I have passed up an oppurtunity to see BSB for free!? I went to the second show, so AJ was already in the hospital, hehe. The music was ok, I guess, the thing that I really didn't like was that all those teeny-boppers screaming at the top of their lungs the WHOLE ENTIRE TIME!! At any other concert you'd cheer between songs, but there they were screaming THE WHOLE TIME!! My ears were ringing and I wasn't standing next to the speakers!

Summersault '98 - August 23, 1998 Molson Park - Barrie
Well it was the day after BSB and I was glad that there wasn't screaming throughout the ENTIRE concert! Also Pear Jam had played at Molson Park the day before. I would have liked to have seen that :| There were a lot of bands at this festival. Since I couldn't see them all this is who I saw [in order]: Esthero, Eve 6, Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra, I Mother Earth, Garbage and Our Lady Peace. I would have liked to have seen Fuel, but I didn't want to leave the front of the mosh pit! I found out that I really like Eve 6. I swing danced to JFSO and had tons of fun. Brian Byrne is a great new singer for IME and their set was really good! Grabage put on a good show. And OLP were great, like always even though there were some technical problems.

The Offspring/Unwritten Law/Jersey - December 5, 1998 The Guvernment - Toronto
So this was my frist small club concert, and I mean small club. It was sold out and only 1000 people were there! As soon as I got in I went straight to the front! Jersey were good, for an indie band from Burlington, hehe. Unwritten Law were better, their lead singer was good looking :) When Offspring finally came on there were amazing! I was standing right next to the speakers, which wasn't the best place since it took 5 days for my ears to stop ringing. But it was good! I knew all the words to all the songs. They played "Intermision" and during it this guy came out with a tray of beers. I got one :P Dexter wanted a Canadian beer, so he crowd surfed to the bar to get one. It was a really fun show and can't wait for the next one!

Silverchiar/Lit/Grinspoon - March 20, 1999 The Warehouse - Toronto
When we got in Grinspoon were just coming out on stage. I'd never heard of them before, and I don't usually like watching bands that I don't know..anyways they were ok, Aussie punk. Then Lit came out and I'd heard one of the songs before cuz it was played on the radio. I liked them better, and during their set we tried to get up to the front. We didn't but that was ok, because it was hard to keep the crowd surfers up since there weren't enough big guys to keep the crowd surfers up. **Oh Daniel, you're soo hot!** So when Silverchiar came out we were pretty much in the middle, a bit off to the right. They put on a really good show. It was a good thing that I bought their new CD the frist day that it came out because they played 8 new songs [one of my friends caught the set list]. They also played most of my favourites from their other albums! That was definetly a good show. There was a lot of energy even though most of their new songs are 'mellow'. Silverchair are still one of my favourite bands and I really want to see them again! [and it's not just because Ben Gillies is hot :P . . Gotta love the drummer!]

EdgeFest '99 - July 1, 1999 Molson Park - Barrie
I saw a lot of bands and it rained all day! The first band that I saw was Serial Joe and after we went around to talk to them. We also saw Gob, Finger Eleven and Treble Charger on the small stage. I must say that Finger Eleven are the best live band that I've ever seen. They were amazing even though it was raining!! On the main stage we saw Mathew Good Band and Silverchair. Before Silverchair came onstage, there was an hour rain delay, so I was mighty soaked! When they finally came on they were amazing, better than their other show, and it was worth getting drenched to see! All in all it was a fun, wet day!

I Mother Earth (free show) - July 13, 1999 The Edge, at the corner of Bay and Dundas - Toronto
This was a free concert of one of my five favourite bands, I Mother Earth. This was the day that their new [3rd] CD came out, so they played a bunch of new songs, that no one really knew. Being the smart person that I am, I wore sandals in the mosh pit! I came out fine, just 1 broken toe nail. The show was awesome! Brian has so much energy and makes the concert soo much better. I can't wait to see them again [october 15th], now that I know their new songs much better.

I Mother Earth/Serial Joe - October 15, 1999 The Warehouse - Toronto
This was my third time seeing I Mother Earth and I must say that it was good. Serial Joe opened and I personally don't like their stuff, so waiting for IME to come onstage was a little tiresome. When IME finally got on stage they put on an amazing show, just as I hoped! Though I must admit that there was more energy at the free show in July. I enjoyed this show better than the one in July because I was able to sing along this time, and it's always more fun when you recognize the songs. Definatley a band that I am willing to see again.

Our Lady Peace/Sterophonics - February 1, 2000 Air Canada Centre - Toronto
Our Lady Peace have got to be one of my favourite bands... but I've gotta say that they kinda suck live. I love their albums, but in a huge arena, something is lost. The Sterophonics were alright, but since I didn't really know who they were I wasn't really into what they were playing. When it was OLP's turn I was ready for some heart felt music, bringing out tons of emotion, like when I first saw them about a year before. So they basically stood on stage and Raine sang the songs. I don't know if it was because his emotion couldn't travel all the way to the second level at the ACC, but I wasn't very impressed. And that is the reason why I'm not going to Summersault this year [that and i don't like the Pumpkins new stuff and i don't really know the Foo's that well, though they're good.]

Finger Eleven/Rubber - June 3, 2000 Playdium - Mississauga
This was a lot of fun. It went from noon til 11pm. And for $20 you got: 3 rounds of go-karts, 1 round of mini-golf, 1 rock-climb, 20 credits for video games and use of the beach volleyball and basketball courts. There were tons of local bands playing during the day and then the headlinersRubber and Finger Eleven were on in the evening. Who are Rubber, you ask. So do I. Finger 11 started at about 10:15 and I was up at the front. At the front there was a little metal fence, which would have been good to mark off bounderies, but at the front on a mosh pit, it didn't work at all!! The fence was down in 5 minutes, even though all the security guards were trying to hold it up, and the pit went right to the stage. It was kinda cool cuz when the crowd surfers got to the stage security brought them up onto the stage and threw them out the back. That was a crazy mosh pit and once again I was wearing sandals. . . Fortunatley I got out of there before the fence went down and I didn't break any nails [though i did get a cut on my knee]. I'm sure that the band did not enjoy everyone going up on stage, but they still played with the great energy and put on the great show that I was hoping for. I will have to see them again and their new cd comes out on my birthday :)

Incubus/Pitchshifter - July 28, 2000 The Warehouse - Toronto
I went in there having no idea who Pitchshifter were and they ended up being pretty good. They're from England and they're 'hard-core'. I don't think that I can say I'm a HUGE fan of Incubus but I do like their newest cd and I have heard a lot of their songs and they are good. They put on an amazing show [not as good as Finger Eleven or IME i must add..]and I love the difference in styles they have, even in one song. When they came out for their encore the DJ played for like 5 minutes and he was awesome!! It was all in all great and just what I needed cuz I hadn't been to a concert in a long time!

Green Day - November 3, 2000 The Warehouse - Toronto
It was really hard to get tix for this show. But after talking to many people I found one! Now imagine Green Day in a small [well reasonably] sized club. Yeah. This was a really good concert. You can always count on Green Day for some energetic punk music. I don't really remember who the opening bands were...but I don't think they were that good. And of course Green Day trashed the stage at the end of their set!! Good old punk rock!

Man it's been a while since i've been to a concert...

Finger Eleven/Sevendust - August 30, 2001 The Warehouse - Toronto
It was good to get back into the concert scene! I think I had gone through OAC without going to a concert. I guess there just wasn't anyone good :( Well I went to this concert expecting what I had seen the last time I saw Finger Eleven, with their wicked guitarist totally into the music. But I don't know. I don't think this show was as good as I've seen them before. It could have been that I was going in with high expectations...or the fact that I almost fainted. Anyways it was still a good show! If you get the chance go and see Finger Eleven!

Trebel Charger/Static in Stero - September 6, 2001 The Rec. Center - Waterloo
Yay for frosh week! I don't know. The people I was with aren't really concert types..So I wasn't able to fully get into the show. The venue also kinda sucked. It was a hockey arena...I don't really remember much more from this concert.

Snow Jam - September 22/23, 2001Exhibition Place - Toronto
The only reason that I went to this was to see Goldfinger. And what happened?? That's right. They canceled! It's ok though because they had a good reason. P.S. Gob really sucked...

Goldfinger - October 16, 2001 The KoolHause (Warehouse) - Toronto
After missing them FOUR times I was finally able to see Goldfinger live!!! And what a great concert!!! This had to be one, no THE best concert I'd ever been to! This had to be the best mosh pit I'd ever been in! And at the end, everyone who was at the front got to go up on stage and sing and dance with them!!! I'm really glad that I finally got to see them and I'm definetly going to be seeing them again!!

David Usher - October 20, 2001 The Lyric - Kitchener
I think that I would prefer Moist live... but it was fun! I don't really know any of his songs, but all in all it was a bit to mellow for me.

Sloan - October 27, 2001 The Lyric - Kitchener
I was thinking about getting tickets for this show...but then my friend Christine won tickets from the radio, so we got in VIP. That was pretty cool, going to the front of the line to get in. The show was alright. I thought that it was really cool how all the band members switch instruments for each song. It shows complete equality within the band.

Econoline Crush/The Mudmen - November 16, 2001 Fed Hall - University of Waterloo
I was not a huge fan of EC, but after seeing Trevor Hurst...man, he's one sexy singer.. Not hot, but he's got the moves! Oh and the music wasn't that bad either :P

Weezer/Saves the Day - February 14, 2002 Copps Coliseium - Hamilton
Copps Coliseium was a surprisingly good place, acoustically, for a concert. The first band Ozma looked pretty young, and they weren't very...interesting. Saves the Day were next, and they're alright, but not really my cup of tea. Finally, when Weezer came on, some people weren't sure if it was them, cuz the singer had a full beard, and they had a new basist. But it was them. Oh yeah and this was one of the worst mosh pit's I've been in. It was so closley packed, that when someone fell from crowd surfing everyone else fell back, and so it was like you were falling in circles the whole time. I think in my old age, I don't want to get all bashed up, I'm just there for the music. Oh well.

Incubus - June 1, 2002 Copps Coliseium - Hamilton
So I got up to the front of the stage before Incubus came on. I wasn't at the very front, there were maybe 2 people in front of me. Once they started to play, I was ready for the usual 2 or 3 songs where everyone settles in. But during the 4th song, I just couldn't take it anymore. I really enjoy Incubus' music, and I wasn't about to fight for my life, and miss watching the show. So I got out and watched from the back, and it was really good. One of the parts that I liked the most was when the set up the "living room" to play Drive and Mexico acoustic. Oh and I really enjoyed the video screens behind them, they added to music without taking your attention away from the band. All in all a pretty good show!

Goldfinger/Simple Plan/Hope to Die - July 4, 2002 Club Denim - Guelph
As we were driving up to this show I was telling Pat [my boyfriend], "this is going to be the best live concert you'll ever see". And sure enough, Goldfinger lived up to their reputation. The venue was an old movie theatre, which they turned into a big hall, with a bar. Being over 19, we went to the bar, and to our advantage the bar went all the way up to the stage. So we were standing at stage level, 2 feet away from the band. That in itself was pretty cool, because I could enjoy the music and not get hurt at the same time! Another great thing about this venue was the fact that there weren't any barriers between the stage and the crowd, there also weren't any security guards [so I'm really glad I wasn't in the pit!] Hope to Die opened, and they were alright, a local band, trying to get the crowd hyped up. The lead singer did stage dive, which was only the beginning... Simple Plan were next, and I have most of their songs on my computer, even so, their live show was pretty lame. They were acting, rather than playing music, you could tell that they were working from a script, and it wasn't very good. Once again, the lead singer stage dove, and some people from the crowd got up on stage to dive too. Then, it was time for Goldfinger. As soon as John Fieldman started singing, he was jumping off the stage and crowd surfing! They had SOO much energy!! During the third song {Questions}, John came over to our side and walked along the wooden railing seperating the bar from the floor below. He stepped on my sweater, and then stopped right infront of us, grabbing Pat's hand to keep his balance. He sang a few lines there, and then jumped into the crowd. Once he made it back to the stage, he said those were the craziest first 3 songs he'd ever played, and the crazyness continued for another 45 minutes. In the middle, when they played 99 Red Balloons, the invited everyone up on the stage to sing, dance and then jump off. So I climbed over the rail and joined the mosh pit on stage. I didn't jump into the crowd though, because from where I was standing the whole show I saw a lot of people get hurt. After that song, they kicked everyone off the stage, so I climbed back over the rail and ended up in the place where I started. Now that makes me really glad to be over 19! After the show as we were walking out, John was sitting beside the merchandise table signing pamphlets about being vegan, so I got one of those, and I also got him to sign the sweater that he stepped on [it was a goldfinger sweater]. It was an amazing night, and defnietly a concert I will never froget, and forever compare to!

Warped Tour - August 17, 2002 Molson Park - Barrie
Good times. I found a new band that I like. Flogging Molly. They're great Irish folk/punk. Really good! And once again, Goldfinger put on a great show! After watching New Found Glory and Reel Big Fish [old favourites], I realized how great the Goldfinger live show really is!!

I Mother Earth - September 27, 2002 The Bombshelter - University of Waterloo
I Mother Earth in a small campus bar!?! How was I going to pass this up? This was their first show in two years..and you could tell that Brian Byrne was out of practice. Singing takes a lot out of you, but he did manage to put on a great show!

Not By Choice - November 29, 2002 The Bombshelter - University of Waterloo
This brought me back to the days of local shows in the 905. Boy how I missed those shows!

Taking Back Sunday - March 30, 2003 Kool Haus - Toronto
This show was ok. The singer was really drunk and thought that the crowd would like to see him swing the microphone around in circles instead of singing into it. I was not impressed. My friends and I were singing, but it just wasn't as good.

I Mother Earth - April 7, 2003 Club 279 - Toronto
IME in another small club! This time it's free!! Because it was the night before their new CD came out, after the show, which was amazing, you could buy the CD and get it signed, so obviously I did. No matter how many times I see IME, I still love thier shows!!

Less Than Jake/ Good Charlotte/ New Found Glory - April 19, 2003 Arrow Hall - Mississauga
Power-pop-punk. Enough said. This show was filled with kids half my age and the venu had TERRIBLE acoustics!

Goldfinger - April 28, 2003 Elements - Waterloo
There were 3 opening bands, so I was ready for a long night

I Mother Earth - ??, 2003 Big Bucks - Burlington
Once again, IME were at their finest. This time Pat got to see how amazing they are.

Concert for Toronto- June ??, 2003 SkyDome - Toronto

Pearl Jam - June 28, 2003 Molson Ampitheatre - Toronto
Amazing concert!! I listen to the live recording of it all the time!

Molson Canadian Rocks Toronto - July 30, 2003 Downsview - Toronto
ACDC rocked, Stones sucked!
